Trick ‘r Treat: The Best Halloween Movie

2009-09-11-trick_r_treatI just watched Trick ‘r Treat and I have to say it is the perfect Halloween themed movie. I know there is an entire series of movies titled Halloween, but those don’t capture the holiday as well as this movie does.

So unless you’re one of those wierdos that puts up Christmas decorations in August, hit the jump for more.

Trick ‘r Treat is made of 4 interlocking stories that happen on Halloween Night. From a couple coming back from the town’s big Halloween parade, to four 20 year old women looking for fun in a new town, complete with skimpy fairy tale costumes, to a legend of a bus crash and the travelers on board.

This movie couldn’t have come out at a better time. It is a super stylized version of Halloween. All the scenery is decked out in its finest Hallows Eve gear, the pumpkins are carved to perfection, and the candy is plentiful! The entire movie just feels like Halloween.

Trick ‘r Treat is written and directed by Michael Dougherty. The same Michael Dougherty that wrote Superman Returns. Just don’t let that fact hold you back from seeing this film. He has done a great job with it, and I hope it stays alive for more movies.

There is very little CGI used in it too. The crew tried to do as much of it old school as they could. That means lots of prosthetic limbs, animatronics, and camera tricks to do their effects. With current movies, they seem to use as much CGI as they can, just so they don’t have to worry about it with filming (look at 2012). The old effects with the over all feel of the movie make it seem like a classic 80’s horror flick.

Trick ‘r Treat is a horror movie, surprise! It doesn’t stick to the typical formula new horror movies go by. It’s not torture porn like a lot of them are, and it doesn’t use cheap jump cuts and loud noises to make you scream. Some could say that its not scary enough, but for what it gets right you can over look that.

As a huge fan of the Halloween season I really enjoyed this movie. It really put me in a big Halloween mood. I can’t wait to slice up some pumpkins, and maybe a few of my neighbors…only kidding.

Trick ‘r Treat is rated R for violence, language, and nudity. It runs 82 minutes long and is available on DVD and Blu-ray
